Disable Front Row on Leopard

By chri - Posted on 09 December 2008

I don't like Apple's Front Row. I prefer XBMC.

To disable the auto startup of Front Row when you press the menu key of your Apple Remote the clean way you should prevent it from running in launchd. By typing launchctl list you'll get the list of the processes associated. In the list there is an com.apple.RemoteUI entry. As this is what starts up Front Row we don't want to have it started any more.

You could try to do launchd unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist like the launchctl(1) advises but a normal user has no permissions on this file. Using sudo will also not help as com.apple.RemoteUI runs in the user-launchd and not the root-launchd.

Just edit the file using sudo vi /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist and add the following in the root <dict>:

<key>Disabled</key>
<true/>

I tried to edit the .plist file to make the menu button start up XBMC. It works partially, but when you quit XBMC it will open again...more research later...

How did it go getting XBMC to start when you press menu? How did you do that? did you find a way for it to not open again when you close XBMC? I would like to do the same but with Boxee. Please reply back. Thanks.

If you're like most Mac users, you probably have had the surprise of discovering your copy of Front Row. In Leopard, they improved the design, and Front Row now identifies itself as Front Row.

hopefully by now you've discovered Plex for OSX, which is a fork of XBMC designed specifically for Mac.

It's a think of beauty, with a strong community behind it:

Also, I was able to edit the com.apple.RemoteUI.plist file within textedit by going into file and folder info, and temporarily allowing anyone to read/write to the file and folder

Im using Boxee, loving it over Front Row.

Anyway I found that if you install Mira for the Apple Remote, you can switch off Front Row functions in there!

Hope this helps
